FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF KANE COUNTY CENTENNIAL HISTORY PROJECT

In 2025, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County will celebrate its centennial anniversary. I was hired to research and document their history, write historical narratives about the key people and developments of their past, and assist in creating exhibits, articles, website content, and social media to share this history with the tax payers of Kane County.

LIVING HISTORY

I have portrayed a Union infantry soldier from the U.S. Civil War for nearly twenty years. With this short YouTube video, I demonstrate the typical equipment an infantry soldier would have carried in a fun and approachable way backed by extensive research.

LANDMARK APPLICATION

The 1905 Heinz Cut Glass Factory in St. Charles, Ill had been approved for demolition in the fall of 2022. To save the building, I contacted a local developer with experience rehabilitating historic buildings who bought the building. On their behalf, I submitted a Determination of Eligibility (DOE) for the National Register of Historic Places to the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office (ILSHPO) which received a favorable determination of its eligibility for the National Register.

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

As part of my Master's in Public History, I completed an oral history of Liz Safanda about the 50th anniversary of the non-profit organization, Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. See a clip here.

MUSEUM EDUCATION PROJECT

The final project of the Museum and Exhibit class for my Master's degree was an exterior audio tour of the Fabyan Villa Museum in Geneva, Ill. While inside a forest preserve and seen by visitors 365 days per year, the museum is only open limited hours in the summer months. The audio tour would be be accessed from QR codes on signs around the outside of the Frank Lloyd Wright redesigned home. This would provide critical data on how frequently the house is visited when not open and educate visitors who would be likely to return during open hours. See the project by downloading the file below.
